| | | | Trouble with France
| | | | The years from the 1750's until the mid-1770's were uneasy times in the colonies. First the colonists fought the French and American Indians to gain land. Then they argued with the British King about their rights and freedom.
In the 1700's Great Britain and France were the two most powerful nations in Europe. They fought with each other to control world trade and to control the New World. Between 1689 and 1763 the two nations fought four wars in Europe and in North America. The last and most important war in America is known as the French and Indian War (1754-1763). The war resulted in a complete victory of Great Britain. The Treaty of Paris, signed in 1763, made Great Britain the most powerful nation in North America. The British gained control of Canada and all of the lands east of the Mississippi River.
